Introduction to Verb Patterns (أوزان)

Learn how Arabic verb patterns (أوزان) systematically modify root meanings.

Verb patterns, known as أوزان (awzaan, singular: وزن wazn), are one of the most elegant features of Arabic morphology. They are standardized templates that, when applied to root letters, create verbs with predictable meanings and conjugation patterns. Mastering the awzaan is the key to productive Arabic vocabulary acquisition.

The Ten Common Verb Forms

Arabic grammarians have identified ten primary verb forms for trilateral roots, numbered with Roman numerals I through X (or Arabic numerals 1-10). Each form has a characteristic pattern and a general semantic shift:

  • Form I (فَعَلَ): The base form with the most basic meaning. Example: كَتَبَ (he wrote).
  • Form II (فَعَّلَ): Often intensifies or makes the action transitive. Example: عَلَّمَ (he taught, from عَلِمَ — he knew).
  • Form III (فَاعَلَ): Often implies doing the action with someone. Example: كَاتَبَ (he corresponded with).
  • Form IV (أَفْعَلَ): Often makes intransitive verbs transitive. Example: أَجْلَسَ (he seated someone, from جَلَسَ — he sat).
  • Form V (تَفَعَّلَ): Often the reflexive of Form II. Example: تَعَلَّمَ (he learned).

Why Patterns Matter

When you learn a new root, knowing the awzaan lets you potentially generate dozens of related words. If you know the root ح-س-ن (related to beauty/goodness), you can predict: حَسُنَ (it was good), حَسَّنَ (he improved something), تَحَسَّنَ (it improved itself), أَحْسَنَ (he did well), and more. Each form follows predictable conjugation rules.

Our Sarf course covers all ten forms in detail, with dedicated lessons for each form's pattern, meaning shifts, conjugation tables, and practical exercises. We recommend mastering Forms I through IV before moving on to the more advanced forms, as these cover the vast majority of verbs you will encounter in everyday and classical Arabic.
