Augmented verb forms (الأفعال المزيدة) are forms created by adding one or more letters to the three root letters. While Form I (فَعَلَ) uses only the root letters, Forms II through X add specific letters in specific positions. These additions systematically change the meaning of the base verb in predictable ways.
Forms with One Added Letter
- Form II (فَعَّلَ): Doubles the middle root letter. Often intensifies the meaning or makes it transitive/causative. كَسَرَ (he broke) → كَسَّرَ (he smashed/shattered).
- Form III (فَاعَلَ): Adds an alif after the first root letter. Often implies doing the action with someone (mutual action). كَتَبَ (he wrote) → كَاتَبَ (he corresponded with).
- Form IV (أَفْعَلَ): Adds a hamza prefix. Often makes intransitive verbs transitive. جَلَسَ (he sat) → أَجْلَسَ (he seated someone).
Forms with Two Added Letters
- Form V (تَفَعَّلَ): Adds تَ before Form II. Often reflexive of Form II. عَلَّمَ (he taught) → تَعَلَّمَ (he learned).
- Form VI (تَفَاعَلَ): Adds تَ before Form III. Often implies pretending or reciprocal action. تَكَاتَبَ (they corresponded with each other).
- Form VII (اِنْفَعَلَ): Adds اِنْ before the root. Often passive/reflexive. كَسَرَ (he broke) → اِنْكَسَرَ (it broke/was broken).
- Form VIII (اِفْتَعَلَ): Adds اِ before and تَ after the first root letter. Various meanings. جَمَعَ (he gathered) → اِجْتَمَعَ (they gathered/met).
Forms with Three Added Letters
Form X (اِسْتَفْعَلَ) adds اِسْتَ before the root. Often means to seek or request the action. غَفَرَ (he forgave) → اِسْتَغْفَرَ (he sought forgiveness). Form IX (اِفْعَلَّ) is rare and primarily used for colors and physical traits.
