The placement test on Ilm Al Lughah is an optional assessment you can take when you first join a course to determine your current knowledge level. Instead of starting from the very beginning, the placement test identifies what you already know and places you at the appropriate lesson in the course. This saves you time and ensures you are learning new material from day one.
The placement test is adaptive — it adjusts the difficulty of questions based on your answers. If you answer correctly, the next question will be harder. If you answer incorrectly, the next question will be easier. This adaptive approach allows the test to accurately gauge your level in a relatively small number of questions (typically 20-30). The test covers key concepts from across the course, sampling from different units and topics.
Based on your results, the platform will recommend a starting point in the course. You might be placed at the beginning if you are a complete beginner, partway through if you have some existing knowledge, or near the end if you have significant prior experience. Importantly, all earlier lessons remain accessible — you can always go back and review material from before your placement point. The placement does not lock you out of any content.
Tips for the placement test: Answer honestly — do not guess or look up answers, as this will place you too far ahead and you will miss important foundations. If you are not sure about an answer, it is better to skip or answer "I don't know" (where available) than to guess correctly. The test is not graded and does not affect your overall score — its sole purpose is to find the right starting point for you. You can retake the placement test if you feel your initial placement was not accurate.
