Introduction to Case Endings (الإعراب)

Understanding the system of case endings that marks grammatical roles in Arabic.

الإعراب (i'raab) is the system of changing the ending vowels of Arabic words to indicate their grammatical function in a sentence. This is one of the most distinctive and important features of Arabic grammar. In fully vowelized Arabic (as in the Quran and classical texts), these endings are explicitly marked; in everyday writing, they are usually omitted but still "understood" grammatically.

The Three Cases

  • الرفع (Nominative/Raf'): Marked by ضمة (ُ) or its equivalents. Used for subjects, predicates of nominal sentences, and other nominative roles.
  • النصب (Accusative/Nasb): Marked by فتحة (َ) or its equivalents. Used for direct objects, adverbs, and words governed by certain particles.
  • الجر (Genitive/Jarr): Marked by كسرة (ِ) or its equivalents. Used after prepositions and in the second part of idaafa constructions.

Example Sentence

Consider: قَرَأَ الطَّالِبُ الكِتَابَ فِي المَكْتَبَةِ (The student read the book in the library).

  • الطَّالِبُ — ضمة (nominative) because it is the subject (فاعل).
  • الكِتَابَ — فتحة (accusative) because it is the direct object (مفعول به).
  • المَكْتَبَةِ — كسرة (genitive) because it follows the preposition فِي.

Why Case Endings Matter

Case endings resolve ambiguity. In a language with flexible word order like Arabic, case endings tell you who did what to whom. Without them, ضَرَبَ زَيْدٌ عَمْرًا (Zayd hit Amr) could be confused with ضَرَبَ زَيْدًا عَمْرٌ (Amr hit Zayd). The case endings (ٌ for subject, ً for object) make the meaning unmistakable.

Mastering i'raab takes time and practice, but it is the key that unlocks precise understanding of Arabic text. Our Nahw course dedicates extensive time to this topic, with hundreds of practice sentences to build your intuition for case endings.
