Writing Arabic: Getting Started

Learn the basics of writing Arabic by hand, including stroke order, letter forms, and connecting rules.

Writing Arabic by hand is a beautiful skill that reinforces your reading ability and deepens your connection with the language. Arabic is written in a cursive style from right to left, and most letters connect to the letters around them within a word. Unlike printed Latin letters, Arabic letters change shape depending on their position — a letter at the beginning of a word often looks different from the same letter in the middle or at the end.

When starting to write Arabic, focus on these fundamentals: stroke direction (most strokes move from right to left or top to bottom), letter proportions (some letters sit on the baseline, some descend below it, and some rise above it), and consistent sizing (maintain the same size for letters within a word). Begin by practicing each letter in its isolated form, then learn the initial, medial, and final forms. The traditional approach is to learn letters in groups that share a base shape.

Dot placement is critical in Arabic writing because many letters are distinguished only by their dots. For example, ب (one dot below), ت (two dots above), and ث (three dots above) share the same base shape. Practice placing dots precisely — dots above a letter should be centered above it, and dots below should be centered below. In handwriting, two dots are often written as a horizontal line (ـ), and three dots as a caret (^).

Our platform provides printable practice sheets and guided writing exercises for each letter. Start by tracing, then progress to copying, and finally writing from memory. Practice writing common words and short phrases to build muscle memory for letter connections. Remember that beautiful Arabic handwriting (calligraphy) is a revered art form in Islamic culture — take pride in developing clean, legible writing as a first step on that journey.
