Sarf Course Roadmap & Prerequisites

A complete overview of the Sarf course structure, topics covered, and recommended prerequisites.

The Sarf course on Ilm Al Lughah is designed as a comprehensive journey through Arabic morphology, from the very basics to advanced topics. This roadmap outlines what you will learn, in what order, and what you should know before starting.

Prerequisites

  • Arabic Alphabet: You should be able to read and write all 28 Arabic letters with their various forms (initial, medial, final, isolated).
  • Basic Vowel Marks: Familiarity with فتحة, ضمة, كسرة, سكون, شدة, and تنوين.
  • No grammar knowledge required: The course starts from zero and builds up systematically.

Course Modules (in order)

  • Module 1: Introduction to Sarf — root letters, the trilateral system, and the concept of patterns.
  • Module 2: Form I Sound Verbs — past tense, present tense, and imperative conjugation.
  • Module 3: Derived Nouns from Form I — active/passive participles, verbal nouns, nouns of place/time/instrument.
  • Module 4: Augmented Forms II–IV — patterns, meanings, conjugation, and derivatives.
  • Module 5: Augmented Forms V–X — completing the ten standard verb forms.
  • Module 6: Weak Verbs — assimilated, hollow, and defective verbs in all forms.
  • Module 7: Special Categories — doubled verbs, hamzated verbs, and quadrilateral roots.
  • Module 8: Advanced Topics — diminutives, relative adjectives (النسبة), and comprehensive review.

Each module includes lessons, interactive exercises, flashcards, and a module assessment. We recommend spending at least 1-2 weeks on each module to allow for sufficient practice and review. The entire course can be completed in approximately 3-6 months depending on your pace.

You can study Sarf alongside Nahw, as they complement each other well. Many students alternate between the two, studying morphology and syntax in parallel to build a complete understanding of Arabic grammar.
