Grammar Analysis: Surah Al-Fatiha

A detailed grammatical analysis (إعراب) of Surah Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran.

Surah Al-Fatiha is the most recited chapter of the Quran, read in every unit of prayer. Despite its brevity (7 verses), it contains a rich tapestry of grammatical structures. Analyzing it grammatically deepens your understanding and transforms your experience of reciting it in prayer.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم: The sentence begins with a prepositional phrase (جار ومجرور). The بـ is a حرف جر, اسم is the مجرور noun (with the initial alif being همزة وصل). الله is مضاف إليه. الرحمن and الرحيم are both صفات (attributes) of الله, in the مجرور case. The متعلق (what the prepositional phrase connects to) is a deleted verb, estimated as أبدأ (I begin) or أقرأ (I read).

الحمد لله رب العالمين: This is a nominal sentence. الحمد is the مبتدأ (subject, مرفوع with damma). لله is the خبر (predicate), consisting of the preposition لـ and the مجرور noun الله. رب is a صفة or بدل of الله, مجرور with kasra. العالمين is مضاف إليه, مجرور with ياء because it's a sound masculine plural.

إياك نعبد وإياك نستعين: Here we see the rhetorical device of تقديم المفعول (fronting the object). إياك is a detached pronoun functioning as مفعول به مقدم (fronted object, منصوب). نعبد is فعل مضارع مرفوع, and the فاعل is the hidden pronoun نحن. The و connects two parallel clauses, and the same structure repeats with نستعين. The fronting of إياك creates حصر (exclusivity): "You alone we worship."

اهدنا الصراط المستقيم: اهدِ is a فعل أمر (imperative verb) with the فاعل being the hidden pronoun أنت. نا is an attached pronoun functioning as مفعول به أول (first object). الصراط is the مفعول به الثاني (second object, منصوب with fat-ha). المستقيم is a صفة (adjective) of الصراط, منصوب. This analysis reveals that اهدنا is asking for guidance toward the straight path — a supplication grammatically structured as a command addressed to Allah.
